““Rooted in the wisdom of clergy of color, this project discovers how community and faith cultivate resilience and hope for the church today.” ”
This study explores how clergy of color are sustaining their ministries in the face of intensified political and theological challenges. In this moment when Christian White Nationalism threatens both democracy and the integrity of faith communities, clergy of color remain on the frontlines of preaching, advocacy, and pastoral care. Yet they also carry unique burdens of racialized stress, community expectation, and public witness.
This Pastoral Study Project will gather the wisdom of clergy of color through interviews, focus groups, and theological reflection circles. Using community-care practices, such as community meals, contemplative practices, storytelling, and mutual support as part of the research process itself, the project embodies the very practices it seeks to study. The goal is to identify theological frameworks and practical strategies that sustain resilience, joy, and prophetic courage in ministry.
Findings will be shared through written essays, workshops, and presentations within the Faith Action Network and beyond, resourcing both local congregations and the wider North American church. Ultimately, the project aims to strengthen the spiritual vitality and public witness of clergy of color for a time such as this.
