FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: GRANTS

Who is eligible to apply?

  • Residents of the United States or Canada may apply. Applicants must either reside in the U.S. or Canada. Specific eligibility requirements are outlined on each program page.

Who is not eligible to apply?

  • The Louisville Institute is a program of Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary (LPTS). As such, members of the LPTS Board, faculty, administration, staff, and student body—and their immediate family members (parents, spouses, or children)—are ineligible to receive Louisville Institute grants.

Can persons living outside the United States or Canada apply for grants?

  • No. Applicants must be living and working in the United States or Canada to be eligible for Louisville Institute grants.

What kinds of projects does the Louisville Institute fund?

  • The Louisville Institute funds research on North American Christianity—ranging from practical theology to ethical, sociological, and historical studies—that strengthens Christian churches and related institutions. For examples of funded projects, please visit the Awards page.

What kinds of projects does the Louisville Institute not fund?

  • The Louisville Institute does not fund basic institutional operations (such as ongoing programs or ministries), construction costs, endowments, publication subventions, routine conference support, educational expenses for degree-seeking students, or Doctor of Ministry projects. HOW DO I APPLY FOR A GRANT?

  • Visit the grant page for the specific program, download the application guide, and review all requirements. When you are ready to apply, click APPLY button. All application materials must be submitted online by uploading documents in PDF format through our portal.

MAY I SUBMIT A PROPOSAL TO MORE THAN ONE GRANT PROGRAM?

  • Yes, but not within the same grant cycle (June 1,2026 – May 31, 2027). Applicants may apply to only one program per year.

CAN I APPLY FOR A GRANT IF I HAVE NOT SUBMITTED FINAL REPORTS FOR A PREVIOUS GRANT?

  • No. Applicants must have submitted all required final reports for prior Louisville Institute grants to be eligible to apply.

DOES LI PROVIDE SAMPLE PROPOSALS?

  • No. Brief project descriptions are available on our website, but we do not provide samples of successful proposals. Each grant selection committee has its own distinct selection process. Applicants should consult colleagues for feedback, and craft a proposal that fits their skills and interests.

WHEN ARE APPLICATIONS DUE?

  • All materials must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on the application deadline. If you encounter problems with the online application, please email us at grants@louisville-institute.org

WHAT IF I MISS THE DEADLINE?

  • Late applications are not accepted. You may apply in the next grant cycle.
