““The integration of mindfulness into diverse aspects of church life can increase the quality of the church experience, appeal to a younger and more diverse population, and help to resolve conflicts and difficulties that arise in church life.” ”
"Exploring Christian Mindfulness: Incorporating Mindfulness Practices in Church Ministry" will look into mindfulness practices in both Western Christian and Eastern spiritual traditions to find ways to incorporate those practices in today's church ministry to deepen faith and reach out to diverse population. This research will include biblical research on books and conversations with retreat leaders at a Yoga center and a Zen center. In our fast-paced and increasingly divided North American culture, a spirituality of mindfulness can provide opportunities for conflict resolution, reconciliation, and spiritual growth, both on personal and communal levels, and ultimately help Christians to establish a deeper connection with God. Practiced in a congregational setting, these mindfulness practices can help existing members with their health and spirituality as well as help attract people—particularly younger and more diverse populations--into the church community.Although mindfulness often may be associated with formal meditation practice, it is broader than this, and mindfulness has the potential to be incorporated into many diverse aspects of life, including church activities. This includes not only worship services, but also social events, hospitality, outreach, charitable efforts, church meetings, and mission trips. Even communal meal events can be transformed into mindful, shared events of profound presence. In fact, nearly any church activity has the potential to become more mindful, spiritual, and appealing to people if mindfulness practice can effectively be incorporated. In addition, church life certainly is not immune to conflict. Discussions can become heated, relationships frayed, and sometimes members even leave the church due to misunderstandings or differences. Integrating elements of mindfulness into church culture also has the potential to help resolve conflicts and facilitate a problem-solving approach to perceived differences.
