“Understanding how LGBTQ+ Christians change their understanding of Christianity may help promote unity in the Church ”
My core project involves two interlocking studies followed by verification and outreach. First, I will conduct a qualitative study focused on understanding how active LGBTQ+ Latter-day Saints retain, let go of, and/or reframe doctrines in order to continue to believe and participate in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I envision a thematic analysis of 25 hour-long interviews.
Second, I will conduct a quantitative verification of the qualitative findings. I will survey about 500 LGBTQ+ Latter-day Saints about the themes that result from the qualitative study to see which ones resonate. Further, I will examine the associations between holding certain beliefs and other key religious and mental health variables. Thus, we will be able to understand (a) which beliefs or adaptations of beliefs are seen as most helpful as well as (b) which beliefs or adaptations of beliefs are most clearly tied to mental health.
From these studies, I will prepare infographics and manuscripts to submit to peer review. I will seek feedback from clergy prior to sharing any of these products. Then, I will submit the manuscripts and share my findings through podcasts, conferences, and printed press
