April 30, 2026 (Louisville, KY) — Louisville Institute is pleased to announce the award of three grants through its First Book Grant (FBG) program for 2026–27. The grants, totaling $165,000 and funded through the generous support of Lilly Endowment Inc., will support early-career scholars in completing significant book-length research projects at the intersection of Christian faith and North American life.
The First Book Grant (FBG) provides grants up to $55,000 (USD) for early career, pre-tenured religion scholars working on a major research project about historically underrepresented Christian traditions, faith and life, trends and movements in these faith communities, and related institutions and social issues. The FBG supports academic sabbatical leave for the completion of research and writing for publication of their first book (or a second book, if necessary for tenure).
“This grant reflects our deep commitment to supporting research that focuses on historically underrepresented Christian traditions and practices in North American scholarship,” said Rev. Dr. Vanessa Lovelace, Executive Director of the Louisville Institute. “These three scholars are doing important, timely work that will enrich both the academy and the church, and we are honored to invest in their research.”
Selected from a competitive pool of applicants through a rigorous review process conducted by an independent selection committee, this year’s three funded scholars are pursuing research that spans theology, history, and religious studies in diverse North American contexts.
