I plan to explore the intersections of evangelization, culture, and their interplay in my own ministry. I have been a student and teacher of Scripture, as well as having experience ministering in parishes of great ethnic diversity. My desire is to reflect upon and enhance my understanding of both these aspects of my ministry through the lense of how the Gospel meets culture.
The first segment of this exploration is to journey and see first hand the lands and cities in which St. Paul ministered, taking the time to reflect upon and expand my knowledge of first century culture, Biblical studies, and the world in which the Gospel was first preached. My particular interest is the interface between Christianity and the cultures of the time.
I plan to then go to Rome, for some ‘spiritual time out' to do a private retreat using Paul's letters.
Upon my return to Chicago, I would like to fast-forward to observe how the Gospel meets culture in the twenty-first century, specifically for Hispanic immigrants to the United States. I plan to do this in an ‘immersion experience', improving my language skills with daily study and becoming a participant/observer in the life of two different Spanish-speaking congregations in Chicago.
That portion will be balanced by time spent with family and friends in Chicago and elsewhere.
