About this sabbatical grant for pastoral leaders (Discontinued)

My "dream sabbatical" is living, praying, studying, and learning in Jerusalem and the rest of the land of Israel-Palestine. My seminary experience of a 5-month semester there has called me back repeatedly for very short visits, most recently leading pilgrim study groups. Now my soul and mind would be refreshed to savor the places and latest biblical and archaeological findings in an unhurried atmosphere without immediate institutional commitments or the care of a group of pilgrim-learners. I propose to live in a community of daily prayer (likely St. George's Anglican Cathedral or a nearby Roman Catholic institute) with very limited opportunity to observe and participate in the crucial pastoral work of the church in this region, perhaps visiting parishes and hospitals in Gaza, Nabus, and Ramallah. In the off-season of winter, I hope to study the biblical sites and museum offerings without hurry and in a solitary mode. As a board member of the San Francisco Interfaith Council, I also wish to deepen my Muslim and Jewish connections, as well as bonds with other Christian bodies. Finally, though primarily, I want to know the Jesus of history and the Christ of faith more deeply in order to share knowledge and passionate faith with my congregation and beyond.
