About this sabbatical grant for pastoral leaders discontinued

After nine years of suburban ministry, and looking ahead to many more years to come (perhaps 35 more), I seek to refresh my spirit, to gain new energy and understanding to approach ministry in my community where faith is of relatively little interest and where the culture and environment often distract from and subvert the practice of Christianity. I seek to gain a new perspective of worship, prayer, social justice, and community by participating in and studying the practice of Christianity in Costa Rica and PerĂº, with the expectation of renewing my ministry in upper-middle class, suburban Phoenix. I also embark on this journey to prepare me for greater leadership in our conference and the increasingly multi-cultural city in which I live. I will be studying Spanish in both locations, immersing myself in community and culture, finding places and people who can help me gain this new perspective, and serving along the way to give back. I am seeking places of spiritual revival, people to pray with, and community leaders who are working for peace and justice. I am also pursuing an increasingly urgent sense of call to expand my understanding of and presence in the world, being particularly drawn to Latin America. Daily I am aware of the importance of being conversant in Spanish and the work that needs to be done to help people better understand, accept, and interact with people from other countries and cultures. The future of ministry here depends on our ability to develop these skills and establish effective hispanic ministry. I expect this "nueva perspectiva" to bear fruit in me personally, vocationally, within the conference as well as my local church and community beyond the church.
