Scott Barker and Christopher Martin are Episcopal priests and Rectors of two growing congregations on opposite coasts. After meeting at a conference a decade ago, we developed a relationship of mutual mentoring and support with a small colleague group. Our three part sabbatical will build on our mentoring routine, leveraging to deeper effect the healthy habits which already anchor our common life.
We will begin by walking a portion of the pilgrim path known as the Camino de Santiago, spending two weeks traveling and praying together. This ancient spiritual practice appeals especially because we already know the healing and refreshing aspects of walking with clergy colleagues at our regular meetings.
At the sabbatical midpoint, we will meet at the Trinity Conference Center in West Cornwall, CT for a gathering of Gen-X priests. This week-long conference will help facilitate deep reflection on priestly identity and re-new friendships with colleagues serving in far away places.
Our sabbaticals will conclude with a month dedicated to renewal of family relationships and friendships outside church circles. We will stay connected by phone and internet, and by our shared interest in cooking well, keeping a healthy home and having quality time with spouses and kids.
