I am the after pastor of a busy and troubled program sized parish that lost its last two clergy to sexual misconduct. This 12 week sabbatical proposal is informed by my readings in leadership and systems theory, and by my experiences with an intensive men's group that has met on a weekly basis for nearly 2 years. The sabbatical would support my emotional, spiritual, and intellectual growth and renewal through a driving "walkabout" across the country and back, accompanied by my Bernese Mountain Dog, Penny. The trip would include camping sojourns at national parks, body work and meditation at Esalen, consultations with experts in pastoral leadership and the after pastorate, a clergy wellness conference, personal writing, reading through a book list, and a month long trip to New Zealand with my wife of 27 years. The sabbatical will balance theoretical reflection and study, deep communion with nature, emotional and spiritual growth, and restorative time for my marriage.
