About this sabbatical grant for pastoral leaders (Discontinued)

After a decade of active ministry in diverse settings, I seek a twelve-week sabbatical to reconnect with creative aspects of ministry, and rediscover my early love and appreciation for ancient forms of prayer and worship. The “Emerging Church” movement in the United Kingdom and United States offers a context in which to explore how spirituality and worship may reclaim ancient forms and adapt to contemporary sensibilities. I would like to immerse myself for the first part of a sabbatical in these groups that are “hyphenated,” as Phyllis Tickle says, joining “historic and emerging, ancient and future.” I would join in their rhythm of work, service and prayer.

Following experiencing other communities’ interpretations of blending old and new, I would like to spend time in voice and harp composition, using ancient music forms and composing sacred music for use in the Church today. I have found that creating, especially music, renews my spirit more than other activities. I experience God more fully, and feel the Holy Spirit as my constant companion in creative pursuits.

The balance of immersion experiences and then reflective composition would provide a nurturing blend of activity and creative reflection. After years of being “rooted” in my local community, this sabbatical would allow me to “branch out” in connecting with other faith communities, growing in my own creativity and sharing the fruits of renewal with others.
