Through the support of a Louisville Institute Religious Institutions Grant, I have been engaged for the last year in research on church-based humanitarian aid efforts for migrants along the Arizona-México border. The purpose of this grant is to request support for dissemination of this research to church communities and leaders. In consultation with clergy, pastors, lay leaders, and church members, the following two different types of dissemination are proposed. First, I plan to return to each individual church that participated in my study and report the findings of my research; and then, along with church leaders to facilitate discussions about the implications and meanings of my research project for particular churches. Second, I intend to organize a one-day conference that would bring together religious leaders involved in humanitarian aid efforts for migrants and those interested in becoming involved in these efforts. My research findings would be the starting point of a day-long discussion — of which I would serve as facilitator — of the challenges of mobilizing support for humanitarian assistance to migrants and ideas about how to overcome them. The proposed grant thus adds an important applied component to my research on this significant case of the church’s social witness.
