About this pastoral leadership discontinued

Peter L. Benson and Carolyn H. Eklin in a seminal work, Effective Christian Education: A National Study of Protestant Congregations, noted that while Christian education is more important than any other factor in promoting faith development and active church participation among members, it faced significant challenges. Some of these include a general disinterest in educational programs among adults, difficulty in finding and keeping volunteer teachers, lack of clergy interest in education, and educational programs and methods that are ineffective and out of touch with learners. Over the past 3 years, I have conducted Christian education workshops for about 200 church leaders and pastors. While these pastors encounter the same challenges expressed in the Benson and Eklin study, they are passionate to develop Christian education in their churches. However, they lack concrete examples. Pastors desire to see models of what effective Christian education can mean in actual congregational settings. The purpose of this research is to study 3-4 midsize to large churches known for their dynamic adult Christian education programs. The study seeks to understand how pastoral leadership expressed in educational vision promotes adult faith formation in these churches, so they can be models for the wider pastoral community.
