Although I have served in the ministry both as a senior pastor and minister of music, the last sixteen years of my ministry have been increasingly filled with administrative duties at the expense of my work as a church musician. Consequently, during my sabbatical I will renew myself with church music by worshiping in theological, liturgical and cultural environments different from my own, something which is not consistent with my full-time pastoral duties. The deep joy I experience while making and listening to music makes this plan consistent with my objective to find physical and emotional rest. My family will share this “musical sabbatical” with me; in fact, the chance to worship with my wife and children is perhaps the highest value of this entire sabbatical. To help me better understand my position as a church musician, I will also attend a conference on worship and music. Besides playing organ and piano for sheer enjoyment during my sabbatical, I shall use the musical and liturgical vocabulary that I will gather in order to compose music for worship. My sabbatical will be a combination of music, rest, worship, and learning that promises to be renewing and generative.
