About 15 months ago I approached Central Christian’s multiple staff with this question: How will we minister in a time of pandemic or climatic crisis? Their response was, Why don't you develop something and get back to us. Pondering their challenge I began to realize I was struggling with my own understanding of hope and faith formation in the journey of life, be it a time of significant upheaval, or as it is for many Westerners, a time of relative prosperity laced with uneasiness regarding the abject poverty and turmoil throughout the world. During sabbatical I propose to do indepth reading and reflection in two areas: 1) theology and philosophy focusing on hope and faith formation, and 2) science fiction, both print and film, dealing with societal upheaval. Parallel to the immersion reading will be two additional disciplines: 1) reflective writing to include a spiritual autobiography and the outline of a book of meditations addressing hope and thanksgiving; and 2) individual interviews designed to elicit reflections of how Christian hope is woven into daily living. It is my heart and mind’s desire to address hope and faith formation in the context of my own life and that of the faith community.
