The Seed That Fell On Good Ground is the sabbatical theme. The focus is to identify and experience personal and community Christian practices that enhance individual faith life. Why are some congregations more successful at helping seekers become disciples? What can be learned from monasteries about the disciplines of prayer, study, self examination and community support? Which common life experiences bring us to reflect on the value of faith? How can pastors be more effective faith teachers and mentors?
The sabbatical plan consists of two ways to explore these questions. One is to experience the practices of a mix of Christian communities: vital mainline congregations, monasteries and Taize style communities. The second is a writing challenge to turn remembered pastoral conversations into short stories exploring how and when holy moments happened. Finally, a personal goal is to return to playing the piano after a forty-five year absence.
During the sabbatical, our church will become a teaching congregation. Members will be trained to lead worship and be pastoral visitors. The Deacons will create and supervise an internship for a divinity school student.
