Hurricane Katrina transformed New Orleans. One year later every aspect of our lives continues to be affected. As rebuilding proceeds slowly, discernible revisioning of the mission of the church is apparent in the parish where I serve as rector. Despite significant losses, pre-Katrina interest in contemplative prayer and a passion for social justice now combine in a powerful response to the present crisis. With New Orleans still in considerable distress--physical, social, emotional, and spiritual--praying for the City and trying to find ways to make the City a better place for all people, especially the poor and the brokenhearted, are major concerns. Moving the congregation toward a deeper identity as a place of healing and hope is a challenge. Taking some time away will enable me to gain perspective on this sometimes overwhelming task and allow me a chance to learn more about the ways contemplative prayer and social action interconnect. I hope to return refreshed and better able to lead St. Andrew's to a deeper, more durable spiritual identity as a sustaining beacon of hope in the City of New Orleans.
