About this sabbatical grant for pastoral leaders (Discontinued)

Throughout ten years of transition in which the church has become more culturally diverse, I have often felt frustrated and inadequate with my European training and limited exposure to instruments, songs and movement of contemporary music and music of North American, African, Caribbean and African American roots. Diverse Roots: An Untapped Reservoir for Enlivening Worship, a twelve-week sabbatical May 28 to August 19, 2007, provides focus for rest, family time, Bible study, recreation, reading and training devoted to deepening my relationship with God, renewal of body and mind, encouraging talents, developing new skills, working in a multicultural context, and opening new musical avenues of worship at University Baptist. Three-day beginning, ending, silent, nature and contemporary music retreats complement days of worship in various cultural settings, prayer, Bible study, rest, recreation, lessons in jazz and voice and practicing keyboard, guitar, Native American flute and hammered dulcimer. Conferences include a large African American worship and class setting, professional instruction in African and Caribbean music, and the International Conference of the Association of Psychological Type. A trip through Wyoming and South Dakota, beach week and individual days with my wife and son deepen relationships with family, extended family and creation.
