This collaboration between an academic theologian and a pastor will address seven issues of importance for the church today: the cross, evil, sin, creation, heaven and hell, the church, and Christians in public life. We will explore these issues in dialogue with each other and in engagement with church members and university students during the process of writing a book together. The book is tentatively titled Generating God-Talk: Creating Theological Conversation across the Church/Academy Divide. For each topic, the book will provide an analysis of why this issue needs to be considered in the church today, a brief historical and theological framework in which to understand the issue, a focus point to help view the issue from a new angle, and a creative engagement with the issue in a public forum. The creative engagements include sermons, discussions with church and student groups, debates, and an op-ed piece. The book is intended for pastors, seminarians, and adult Christian education classes. The project as a whole, and the book resulting from it, will attempt to model and instigate the process of thinking about contemporary issues theologically and pastorally, bridging the gap between the parish and the academy.
