I will use my sabbatical to help me recover the biblical role of pastor as one who equips the saints for the work of ministry (Ephesians 4:11-12).
First, I will explore the changing role of pastors in post-modern churches by visit thriving churches and talking with their leaders about what they have discovered as essential areas of focus in equipping the saints for ministry. I will also study books that identify key changes in the role of the pastor in the post-modem church.
Secondly, I will explore models for expanding small group ministries by studying and visiting churches with effective small group ministries to discover effective practices, policies, resources and training.
Thirdly, I will develop my knowledge and skills as an organizational change agent by studying and receiving personal coaching with Easum Bandy Associates. I will use a week long retreat to integrate my learning's and map strategies for leading my congregation through the transition from a clergy focused church to one in which everyone is empowered for ministry.
Finally, I will focus on my spiritual renewal through daily prayer, journaling, inspirational reading, and a two week travel study tour with my wife following Paul's journeys through Turkey and Greece.
