The disciples on the road to Emmaus, whose hearts were burning after their encounter with the risen Jesus, returned to the community to recount what happened to them. My sabbatical journey, taken January 30-April 20, 2007, will be an experience of capturing the 'burn' and returning to the parish to recount the experiences in all the aspects of my ministry. It will utilize the resources of the Institute for Continuing Theological Education of the North American College in Rome, a 12-week program offering priestly renewal through: presentations by professors from the pontifical Roman universities; prayer and fraternity with English?speaking priests from around the world; a 5 day retreat in Assisi; Lent & Easter liturgical celebrations at St. Peter's Basilica and other shrines; all while living in Rome, experiencing the Church universal in all its variety, and drawing near our chief Shepherd, our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI. In addition, during the 9-day semester break, I propose to walk in the footsteps of John & Paul, by visiting Athens, Corinth, Patmos, and Ephesus.
