In contrast to the many books on the topic of “finding God’s will” or “making spiritual decisions,” the book proposed in this project will address the issue from a more biblical, communal, and global perspective. Resources gathered in a previous sabbatical project, from extensive reading and worldwide study and correspondence, and from Mennonite communal discernment processes and Benedictine spiritual direction will be combined to offer a larger array of sources for wisdom. After considering various obstacles to good spiritual discernment, the proposed book will lay a basis for decision-making in trinitarian life, scriptural formation, and community support. Upon this foundation will he laid principles of “rectifying the names” and establishing “focal concerns,” and with these guidelines various global values will be elaborated. Primary attributes of other cultures to be displayed include emphases on hospitality, reconciliation, willingness to suffer, and eschatological celebration.
