What models of friendship sustain the imagination and well being of clergy? Can clergy 'have friendship with members of their parish? If so, what does that look like? What topics or activities are in or out of bounds? If not, how do clergy find time to cultivate and nurture friendship, and where do they go? How does being a United Methodist clergy and therefore itinerant affect the ability to make, nurture, and sustain friendship? These are the broad questions I wish to consider during my sabbatical experience. I will utilize the resources of an internet preaching discussion list to which I have belonged for over seven years, seeking voluntary responses to a questionnaire and further discussion to the issues raised. I wish also to use the gift of sabbatical time to nurture some important friendships in my own life by spending time with persons whose gift of friendship has been a cherished means of grace. Finally, I will use part of this time to travel to Iona, Scotland, for a brief residency in an intentional Christian community. While there I wish to explore the way friendship is connected to and distinctive from the commitment to live in an intentional Christian community.
