About this sabbatical grant for pastoral leaders discontinued

"Humility & Hospitality: Spiritual Virtues for Ecumenical & Interfaith Ministry" is the proposed theme for my sabbatical. This theme will offer a focus for my exploration of the role of humility as a spiritual and social gift for hospitable ecumenical and interfaith work. The goal of this exploration is the writing of a book relative to the proposed theme. This proposed exploration is grounded in lessons I have learned as one of the few ordained African American female pastoral leaders in a church family dominated by African American male leadership and culture while at the same time engaged in an ecumenical and interfaith context of ministry dominated by a structural paradigm and culture that is Anglo and westernized. My "minority" experience has resulted in valuable lessons learned from the spiritual and social exercise of humility and pain of humiliation in both settings. The sabbatical period is proposed for April 16 July 18, 2005. The sabbatical is proposed to take place in Pretoria, South Africa in relation to the University of Pretoria and my coach who lives in Johannesburg, South (less than 30 minutes away by train or car). The South African context also allows me to access the work of Rev. Andrew Murray (South African writer on the subject of humility). My husband is also planning to be affiliated with the University of Pretoria. He will be a Fulbright Scholar. My daughter will be enrolled in a South African school during our stay. My relationship will also be with the South African Council of Churches.
