The practice Christian spiritual healing as a personal discipline and as a quality in the service of worship in the African American reformed tradition is the theme of this proposal. My plan is to integrate the practice personally in daily living and apply that practice as a pastoral leader. Spiritual practice and worship are emphasized. African American Presbyterians present an understanding of spiritual healing which contributes to a holistic witness of the "historical black church." Rather than being seen as a cultural anomaly, Black and Presbyterian, we can make our own witness to the religious ancestry of "Africans in the diaspora," consequently, broadening African American religious tradition, impacting the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and thus affecting American religious life. This plan includes time for study to better develop daily disciplines for spiritual healing practices, time for travel to conduct face to face interviews, and attending Black Presbyterian worship services that emphasize spiritual healing. My intent for the sabbatical is to facilitate personal integration of the practice of Christian spiritual healing and expand the application of that practice in the life of the worshipping community.
