About this pastoral study project

Statistics tell us that one out of six couples in this country is currently struggling with infertility. And, because of this disease, those affected often wrestle in the silence of shame with some of the deepest questions about life and death, providence and prayer, and what it means to remain in a fertile community as an infertile person without their church community even knowing about it.

When a couple seeking to have children endures long roads of never-ending tests, treatments and/or meetings with potential birth parents or agencies for adoptive purposes, where does hope lie? Does hope lie in medical technology, improving every year and the doctors who are well studied in it? Does hope lie in prayers of petition for exactly what the couple wants? Or might God’s hope offer a greater imagination for what an infertile season might look in their emotional, spiritual and financial journey to welcome children into their family?

Such are questions that this project proposal will seek to address through the pastoral lens of my husband's and mine own personal experiences with infertility through the completion, publication and presentation of a spiritual memoir.
