About this pastoral study project

The 21st Century is witness to new expressions of church in North America. In particular, new monasticism, a growing movement of Christian intentional communities continues to grow in vision and scope. In 2006, my wife and I founded Radical Living, a Christ-centered co-housing community in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. Radical Living, akin to other intentional communities across the country, is a distinct place of spiritual formation where we discuss and dissect issues specific to our neighborhood (e.g., gentrification, class disparity) and to our personal faith. Community is the place where we learn to resolve conflict, make decisions and, most importantly, grow in love for God and our neighbors. It has been our experience that discipleship must be central to Christian community if it is to be sustainable. In an effort to foster spiritual growth at Radical Living, I have developed a curriculum, “Toward a Radical Spirituality: Repentance, Resistance and Revolution.” I am requesting the support of the Louisville Institute, via a Pastoral Study Project grant, to develop this curriculum into book form. This book will serve as a resource for those who guide and/or frame discipleship for other people, and will be valuable for those who live in prophetic communities.
