In my pastoral work in the Archdiocese of Seattle over the past thirty years, largely in a role of parish leadership as the Pastoral Life Director appointed by the Archbishop, I have become aware that many adults raised in the church after Vatican II are unformed in faith. They have neither a relationship with Jesus through the church and sacraments nor an understanding of the traditions and teachings of the church. I plan to explore the reasons for this phenomenon and ways to address the lack of formation in faith by studying sociological surveys describing this cultural and ecclesial reality, by reviewing the latest theological articulations, and by assessing catechetical approaches to adult faith formation. I will also seek out workshops and conferences on forming Catholics in faith and tradition. My hope in applying for this sabbatical is that I will have more resources to evangelize Catholics so that they will be formed in their relationship with Jesus and in the traditions and teachings of the faith.
