About this pastoral study project

In my nearly seven years experience as a Bishop in the Episcopal Church and first hand experience as a Priest, spouse and parent, I have witnessed many implosions of pastoral leadership when a minister's family has suffered trauma, illness and/or loss. My experience tells me that the Episcopal Church and other denominations have not been providing adequate care responses to those clergy in crisis. This is especially apparent with Native ministers and their families. I would like to examine my experience through qualitative research methods, interviewing clergy and their families. I will be interviewing a wide cross-section of clergy and their families in order to understand the issues that surround these times, and begin to develop a method of response for our denomination and others. The interview pool will include men and women from several denominations, as well as interviews with clergy representing minority populations, especially Native American, Latino, and African American clergy.
