About this pastoral study project

Rather than a theological apologetic for trans inclusion, this project aims to reframe the conversation by focusing on trans creativity and joy as sacred defiance and resistance. Taking a relational and intersectional approach, I will seek out interviewees from a range of identities across gender, race, disability, age, and religion. My research approach will prioritize trustbuilding and depth of story over traditional researcher objectivity. Drawing on my pastoral, scholarly, and artistic skills, I will engage in narrative research to learn about these creatives’ lives and practices, and then engage in thematic and autoethnographic analysis of their stories. After the initial interviews, I will also invite interviewees to a group conversation where we collaboratively explore the themes of creativity, joy, and sacred resistance, including this conversation as a chapter in the book.

I will use my narrative skills to interweave all these stories into a book that is accessible, inspiring, and compelling. This book is for trans people and their loved ones; to offer stories that inspire, and highlight trans strength, resilience, and creativity. This book also aims to inspire and challenge church communities to “step into the gap” with their own activism in support of the trans people in their congregations and wider communities.
