About this pastoral study project

Preaching today, like many preachers, I draw on a wealth of biblical and theological scholarship and homiletical craft. I perceive the need to connect the gospel to the lived reality of a diverse audience, many new to faith, in ways that honor their experience and deepen their encounter with God.

In the preparation practices of stand-up comedians, I see tools for leveling up my preaching. Comedians plumb the depths of their experiences to connect with their audience. Comedians are in dialog with current events that frame their message. Comedians take their audiences seriously, and they can adapt as needed.

My project will focus on the preparation and comedy of Mike Birbiglia. He is a thoughtful communicator with an appreciation for the craft and artistry of comedy. Through several immersion classes at "Second City Chicago," traveling to see Mike Birbiglia in action, and I've reached out to Mike Birbiglia in hopes of interviewing about his process (though it may be a longshot); I will explore what goes on behind the scenes before a comedian ever steps on stage to explore adapting such a process for my practice of preaching.
