About this pastoral study project

My project is in four parts - three parts research, and one part writing. I have already been engaged in the first leg of the research, which is to saturate myself in the pastoral theology of Eugene Peterson. The second leg of the research will be to facilitate discussions of The Contemplative Pastor and Working the Angles with a diverse group of 12-15 congregational pastors; these gatherings will likely be online. I want to know how contemporary congregational pastors receive or reject Eugene Peterson's perspective on ministry. The third leg of the research will be to gather a smaller group of pastors (6-8) to facilitate discussions of seven psalms as they relate to parish ministry; if possible these gatherings will be in person in a semi-retreat setting. I am still finalizing the seven psalms, but possibilities include Psalm 1 as an entry point into the pastoral practice of meditating on scripture; Psalm 42 as an entry point into addressing the challenges of doubt, forsakenness, and ministry in a secular age; and Psalm 90 as a reminder that while our work is meaningful, we are not Atlas holding the world up - God is at work. The second part of the project is writing a book tentatively called Seven Psalms: Reclaiming Contemplative Ministry in a Secular Age. The book will be rooted in biblical engagement, prayer, conversations with contemporary pastors, and the pastoral wisdom of Eugene Peterson.
