About this pastoral study project

For too long, the debate surrounding abortion and sexuality has been polarized and politicized. From media and policymaking to churches and clinics, religious conservatives — particularly white evangelicals — have dominated the conversation by shaming people for seeking abortion care.

As an “exvangelical” Christian who once denounced abortion and now proudly advocates for it, I firmly believe that hearts and minds can be transformed. That there is another way of being in this world. That restoration and redemption is possible.

This project, therefore, seeks to amplify the voices of evangelicals/exvangelicals of color and their stories of deconstruction to help transform the moral, theological, and political conversation surrounding abortion.

My goal is to publish a book that weaves together historical, political, theological, and social commentary about abortion and how these themes intersect with my own journey of deconstruction, while also weaving in the stories of 30 other evangelical faith leaders who’ve changed their minds about abortion.

Through narrative deconstruction, this project will utilize storytelling to foster moral imagination, decenter white evangelicalism, and create space for people to question their theological and moral assumptions about abortion in life-giving ways.
