About this pastoral study project

While church coalitions have been a significant part of social change through history, and collaboratives or larger Asian American Christian networks exist, currently a coalition for Asian American churches does not exist. This project explores the various historical, political, and theological realities that impact this reality. Recognizing that Asian American Christianity is heterogeneous, this project will work with local community leaders who possess different transnational migration narratives. This project will articulate the specific strengths as well as challenges that this diversity presents to the creation and mobilization of Asian American churches. It will depend on a mix of methods, including interviews, research, and collaboration with church leaders. Upon identifying assets and barriers, this project will organize various catalytic events that might equip local Asian American church communities to engage with a local issue impacting their communities. By encouraging and experimenting with Asian American churches to build local coalitions, this project would deepen understanding and amplify the role of the Asian American church community towards building “the beloved community”. This project foregrounds the prophetic voice of Asian American churches and clergy through civic engagement.
