About this pastoral study project

Throughout American History, the Black Church has been pivotal in the fight for equality. The Black Church has centered faith, supported protests and social movements, and resisted white supremacy. Dating back to the 1770s and 1780s small groups of slaves would congregate to hear Black ministers and the Black Church began to grow. During the Abolitionist movement, the Black ministers challenged the use of Christianity to justify slavery. Many Black Churches were a part of the Underground Railroad. During the Civil Rights Movement, The Black Church provided a safe haven and community support by welcoming people to come to their space to organize. During this time, the Black Church became a strong social and political institution. My research question is How does the Black Church resist racial and social inequalities, support cultural movements, and influence social change as part of the Black Lives Matter Movement.
