About this pastoral study project

This project focuses on the research, compilation, and written dissemination of a framework and guideline for effective mission and church/school-based service learning and community development work.

The backbone of the project will come from my 7 years experience as a missionary of the Episcopal Church and as the founder and executive director of the Elewana Education Project, an educationally based non-government organization in Kenya. The Project will pull together my writings and experiences from working aboard and, coupled with site visits and interviews with other missionaries and development organizations in the U.S. and overseas, result in a written work that will be both entertaining and informative for churches and schools interested in creating effective and meaningful missionary and service-learning endeavors.

The theme for the project will focus on avoiding the common pitfalls that plague many mission and service learning experiences and expound upon what really works to create lasting community change through mission, both from the perspective of the ‘sending’ organization (congregations, schools, and development organizations) and the ‘receiving’ community, whether foreign or domestic.
