About this pastoral study project

Poor people and minorities make up the majority of those incarcerated, and because these people generally don’t attend mainline churches, this population has often been forgotten or irregularly served by suburban churches. However, after working in a big-city jail for 15 years, I can attest that God is working behind bars; God is changing hearts and lives. I was fortunate this summer to attend the writing workshop, “Poetry, Prose and Prayer,” led by Michael Dennis Browne at Collegeville Institute. While I was there I was encouraged to write a book telling of the men and women I have met and how the power of the Holy Spirit has helped them to see their lives as meaningful, even when facing a lifetime in prison. An Episcopal priest in the workshop said my writing made me “a trusted guide to world most of us don’t know.” I would like to show others how to be good pastors to those locked up as well as those who are released and need a church home where they can rebuild their lives. Ideally, the final product would be a draft of a book with a working title of “God’s Grace Behind Bars.”
