About this pastoral study project

We live in restless times. There is strain, and there is excitement. How do we speak of the Triune God these days? In this current restlessness, my hunch is that my denomination has four movements: Celtic, Expansive, Neo-Orthodox, and the Indifferent. I’d like to find out what they are saying. I want to ask how important the concept of the Trinity is in their work. I also want to ask about their prayer life and personal faith: how do they address God?

One way is find out is to listen to people, in an open-hearted, disciplined manner. Another is to read fresh theology, and the reflections of historians. A third is to attend conferences and hear what is being said before it is written down. A fourth is to examine the careful, concise theological rationale of the decisions in official church courts, found in archives.

I hope to interview theologians, professors of Canadian church history, leading preachers, hymn writers, and retired ministers. I hope to read, attend conferences, and discuss my findings with colleagues. This research would prepare me to craft a contemporary, constructive theological essay on the Triune God.
