About this pastoral study project

The Interim Ministry Network began in 1981 as an off-shoot of work done by the Alban Institute and has been the standard bearer of interim ministry practice in mainline denominations. In the past three decades, however, there have been tremendous changes in North American Christianity. The project I propose would be a collection of essays by seasoned interim ministers, judicatory officials who give oversight to transitional ministry, and observers of American church life from across the nation and from a variety of Protestant denominations. Together we would reflect upon the changing landscape of American Christianity and new and better ways of doing transitional ministry. The Alban Institute has agreed to publish this volume with me as the collaborator and editor. In addition, I would like to gather the authors together for a weekend long symposium to present our work, have a vigorous conversation about the practice of transitional ministry today, discuss essential skills needed to be a successful interim minister, and to discuss next steps for further study, training, and practice. The hoped for outcome is that the book would be widely read, generate further conversation and study, and lead to creative practices of transitional ministry.
