My research project seeks to extend work I initiated in my doctoral program, focused on leading congregations to understand outreach work as justice-focused, rather than charity-focused. I plan to work with five congregations, interviewing participants, leading them in learning sessions, and guiding them through a visioning process to plan their congregation’s future outreach work. As a result of the learning sessions, I believe they’ll be able to design a justice-grounded ministry plan. I plan to use my research results to develop a consultation plan to use with other congregations. I will also use my results to write a book and companion curriculum to be used by pastors and church leaders seeking transformation in their congregations’ outreach work. I believe this work is significant for the church because although the biblical witness of God’s call for justice is clear and pervasive, many church, including those I’ve served, focus on short-term, symptom-addressing, optional charity work. I believe God, who loves justice, requires us to labor for justice. When we labor for justice, we participate in God’s vision of wholeness for the world. My project aims to help leaders transform congregants into laborers for God’s justice.
