“If you are curious about how dramatically the face of ministry has changed in the last 60 years, then the “State of Women and LGBTIQ Clergy in the U.S.” is likely to surprise and intrigue you. ”
For years I wondered: how many ordained women and lgbtiq ministers are leading churches in the U.S.? I finally stopped waiting for someone else to write that report and did the research, filling a data gap of 20 years. The 2018 State of Clergywomen Report has been downloaded 119,000+ times and is widely quoted. With sudden losses of clergywomen from the workforce in 2020, due to Covid-19 and related social pandemics, we urgently need to update and expand the report. “The State of Women and LGBTIQ Clergy in the U.S.” (2026) will compile and present statistics and insights about women and lgbtiq ministers and seminarians by asking: How has the social location of ministers in the United States changed since women were first ordained in substantial numbers in the 1960s? Building on previous studies, and noting new trends, the 2026 report will attend to intersections of gender, race, ethnicity, and denomination. Research assistants will help update the numbers, while I consult with experts and organizations that specialize in ministry. With course and administrative release, I will write and seek critical review for the report, then share it widely, making it accessible to scholars, journalists, church and denominational leaders, and ministers.
