“…critical to refine methods of research and teaching so as to be more informed by experiences, approaches, and questions of those who are marginalized. ”
Taking on Practical Theology seeks to unmask “gods” of practical theology, key methodological categories that have been unwittingly “deified” in research and teaching. The project draws on Asian American perspectives to take on three “gods,” namely the duality of theory and practice, Christian normativity, and common understandings of context. Steeped in the assumptions, priorities, and research practices of those at the center of discourse, these “gods” are nominated unconsciously as normative and often taken as pre-ordained. Idolizing these “gods” that express and remain protected by white privilege harms the field, the researchers, students, and the church communities that the field is intended to serve. The book provides constructive proposals to help readers revisit, revise, and strengthen tools for researching, writing, and teaching practical theology.
