About this dissertation fellowship

Currently the Korean church in Los Angeles is in a period of generational transition. My project will undertake an analysis of the institutional restructuring that is currently taking place within Korean churches by focusing on the inventive ways in which second generation Korean Americans are carving out new spaces where the intersection of race, religion, and ethnicity expresses itself. The innovations that are currently taking place within the Korean Christian community is sociologically interesting because it helps us to better understand three very important and related aspects in the Korean American experience and the role that religion plays in the adaptation process. First, the social realities of Korean churches cannot be understood in the strict framework of immigration and assimilation. Currently, particularly in multi-ethnic Los Angeles, second generation Korean Americans do not face a stark choice between assimilation and the maintenance of ethnic identity. Rather, new individual/collective ethno-religious identities are being shaped, contested, and continually redefined and newly formed second-generation Korean American churches serve as laboratories for much of this experimentation. Second, these new churches character and vision reflect their unique responses to changing social realities both within the group and the mainstream society. Finally, at these new churches, the ethnic boundary of Korean is being gradually replaced by a racial boundary of Asian. This phenomenon reflects importance of race as a primary organizing principle of relationships in the United States. This study on second generation Korean churches provides important clues and insights on how the children of post-65 immigrants will participate in as well as transform America’s religious landscape.
