About this pastoral study project

Galileo Church's story of creating a Christian community of belonging for spiritual refugees is a story that should be told. How do Millennials form community around the life of Jesus, especially when most of them have little ecclesial experience to draw from? How do LGBTQ+ persons and their beloveds learn to trust a church when church has been hurtful and diminishing in the past, especially here in the conservative suburbs of a large Texas city?

I propose to write a memoir of Galileo Church's first four years of life together, intertwined with my own self-discovery of *vocatio* as a pastor with nearly 20 years of experience in traditional congregational ministry. I am often asked to return to my clergy colleagues from this spiritual-but-not-religious frontier in North American Christianity and offer words of wisdom, but the urgent nature of Galileo's life together has not afforded time for big-picture reflection.

Additionally, Galileo Church is at a point of transition. In our fifth year we are "scaling up" into a more sustainable size, writing policies and clarifying practices and generally trying to build a stronger framework for our longevity. We need to pause and take stock of where we've been, so that we might know more clearly where we are meant to go. As the church's visioneer, founder, Lead Evangelist, and theologian-in-residence, it is my task to step back and describe what I've seen, and try to say a good and true word about what it means -- for us, for the wider church, and for the world God (still) loves.
