About this sabbatical grant for researchers

My project interrogates how Christian discipleship should respond to current global crises such as economic inequality, international migration, and climate change. While many North American Christians are obsessed with economic security, viewing material wealth as a blessing from God, they are blind to the ways that capitalism drives every aspect of life and reinforces inequity between classes and geographies. This project interprets Jesus’ radical teaching and alternative transactional praxis, critically analyzing the intersections of power, economy, gender, and ecology. An essential contribution of this project to both the church and broader scholarship is to bring insights into previously neglected aspects of the biblical text, interpretation, and church practice by discussing biopolitics, debt sovereignty, and food, labor, reproductive, and ecological justice as Jesus’ main concerns in the Gospel of Mark.
