Many Americans report experiences of divine guidance. For example:

• The 2004 General Social Survey showed that 57% of Americans selected ‘most days’ to ‘many times a day’ when asked if they ‘feel God’s guidance in the midst of daily activities.’

• A 2008 study by Baylor University found that 20% of Americans agreed with the statement, “I heard the voice of God speaking to me,” and 44% agreed with the statement, “I felt called by God to do something.”

These percentages rise significantly when the questions are asked to self-identifying Christians. Thus it is well established that many people claim to experience divine guidance. However, much less known, is how people with such experiences respond to them in terms of actual concrete-action and life-choices.

Through over 100 in-depth qualitative interviews with people from various Christian and spiritual backgrounds (all of whom report high levels of divine guidance), it is hoped that patterns will emerge around such questions as:

• How often do such mystical experiences typically result in real-life concrete-action?

• How do people understand and describe these experiences and related life-choices?

• What kinds of decisions are most often made based on divine guidance?

• Are there signs of any demographic patterns among the various responses?
