“This project expands a unique formation program by integrating Indigenous wisdom and Catholic faith and social teachings in areas such as liturgy, end-of-life care, environmental stewardship, and synodality to form pastoral and lay leaders committed to reconciliation. ”
Building on the momentum and insights of our 2023–2025 Pastoral Study Grant, we propose to deepen and expand the Indigenous Pastoral and Lay Leader (IPL) Education Program through further research, curriculum development, and community engagement. Participants in the initial phase expressed a clear desire for more experiential learning, deeper scriptural and theological integration, and sustained accompaniment. This next phase will focus on five interrelated areas:
1. Respectful engagement with Indigenous spirituality, particularly in areas such as appropriate interculturation of Catholic liturgy, Indigenous understandings of end-of-life, and relational approaches to environmental stewardship;
2. Broader representation of Indigenous voices including youth, young adults, parents and elders.
3. Hands-on experiences such as Indigenous-Catholic dialogue around end-of-life; community-based activities, and interactions that embody synodal processes of listening and walking together;
4. Stronger theological grounding in Scripture and Catholic Social Teaching to support participants in articulating a faith-based rationale for reconciliation and justice; and
5. Creation of an alumni network with ongoing learning opportunities, accompaniment, and leadership formation.
This project is essential as the Church in Canada—and across North America—seeks to move beyond words to actions of healing and solidarity. It strengthens the Church’s witness by forming leaders who can engage in intercultural dialogue, advocate for justice, and build relationships rooted in mutual respect and spiritual depth.
