About this pastoral study project

This project utilizes quantitative, qualitive, and theoretical research to explore the changes in Christian religious participation that result when individuals transition into nursing home and assisted care facilities. It will begin by first exploring the broad effects of long-term care transition on social isolation through an examining of existing gerontological research. Next, it will examine the underlying roots of these issues from a philosophical and theological perspective through an engagement with key texts from the field of disability studies. Finally, qualitative interviews with assisted care residents will be conducted to examine the types of religious participation available before and after their transition, helping to elucidate the degree to which such participation has been altered, as well as highlight effective practices that have been deployed to bolster Christian religious participation within assisted care facilities. The project will generate scholarly and online publications that will aim to raise awareness of the spiritual needs of assisted care residents, as well as provide resources and training for those currently ministering to and alongside individuals in these facilities.
