“Envisioning provocative new futures and crafting intriguing propositions this congregational field report offers hope challenge direction and energy for change in the emerging church era. ”
New mainline churches are flourishing even as struggling established churches hunt for new models and answers to help them navigate this difficult season and thrive. The search for patterns leading to vibrant church life is decades long and boasts no remarkable results thus suggesting that models are not what leaders need. Instead most valuable in this moment is mindset. In the emerging era there are distinctive shifts in outlook which contrast with assumptions and behaviors characterizing the mainline church’s previous sixty years. It is time to change gears. Recognizing the contrasting mindsets unfolding during this time of paradigmatic change and sticking the shifts provide guideposts to help church leaders adjust their way of being and effectively address issues facing church today. Building on doctoral work completed four years ago this project continues my ongoing reexamination of the conclusions editing and building on them in light of recent changes in U.S. culture and then sharing them in book format. Church leaders as local as Louisville and as far away as South Africa Korea Brazil and Germany have requested written materials to follow-up the workshops and verbal presentations offered on the paradigm shifts facing the church and how to navigate them in between the times. This project provides the time away needed to produce such a resource.
