About this pastoral study project

This project will examine how specific events leading to "The Great Disruption of 2020" have created a tipping point in American society and its structures, including religious institutions. How will the church address the grief, trauma and economic collateral damage left by the tidal wave of COVID-19? How will the church address its failures to do what is right in the face of its own systemic racism and institutional power dynamics? What will free the church to once again embrace and proclaim Jesus' message of Life "on earth as it is in heaven"? Through study, story-telling, interviews with theological and psychological experts on moral trauma and moral injury, I intend to explore the following:

1. Define moral injury, giving historical and biblical context to our current situation.

2. Describe how moral injury has impacted both church and society in the midst of the convergence of multiple events taking place in 2020 and beyond.

3. Share stories of individuals who have experienced different kinds of moral injury in this time period.

4. Identify strategies for engaging in "grace-filled conversations" as a means of hearing the stories of those who have suffered from moral injury, and moving forward to reclaim Jesus' mission as the church's ongoing mission for healing: "...to proclaim good news to the poor, to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to set the oppressed free, and to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." (Luke 4:18)
